California income tax in 2026

California taxes income at graduated rates from 1% to 12.3%, plus 1% on taxable income over $1 million, after the state standard deduction and exemption credits. State disability insurance (SDI) is a separate paycheck line.

Brackets, the $5,900 / $11,800 standard deduction and the exemption credits ($158 personal, $491 per dependent) are the Franchise Tax Board's indexed amounts for tax year 2026. The 1% Behavioral Health Services tax applies to taxable income over $1,000,000 for every filing status. California does not allow the federal exclusion for health savings account contributions, so HSA dollars stay in California wages. Exemption credits phase out at high incomes (above roughly $260,000 single); that reduction is not computed, so the state line can run slightly low there.

  • Standard deduction: $5,900 single, $11,800 married filing jointly, $11,800 head of household.
  • Personal credit: $158 for you ($316 for a couple) and $491 for each dependent, taken off the tax.
  • 401(k): traditional contributions come out before California income tax, as they do for federal tax.
  • HSA: California does not exclude health savings account contributions from taxable pay.
