Alabama income tax in 2026

Alabama taxes income at 2%, 4% and 5% after a standard deduction that shrinks as income rises, a personal exemption, and a deduction for the federal income tax you pay.

The standard deduction follows the Department of Revenue chart: the full amount up to $25,999 of Alabama AGI, stepping down to the minimum at $35,500 ($17,750 married filing separately). The dependent exemption is $1,000 per dependent at AGI up to $50,000, $500 up to $100,000 and $300 above. Federal income tax is deductible; this estimate deducts the federal income tax it calculates for the same wages. Act 2026-604 lets workers deduct up to $1,000 of overtime premium pay for 2026 through 2028; it is applied when overtime hours are entered. Head of family uses the single rate schedule with a $5,200 maximum deduction and a $3,000 exemption.

  • Personal exemption: $1,500 for you ($3,000 for a couple), taken off income.
  • 401(k): traditional contributions come out before Alabama income tax, as they do for federal tax.
