Washington
Washington paycheck calculator
Washington does not tax wages. It does withhold two premiums that surprise people who moved from a no-tax story. Paid Family and Medical Leave takes an employee share of about 0.808% of wages up to the $184,500 Social Security base in 2026. WA Cares, the long-term care fund, takes 0.58% of wages with no cap. Together they are not an income tax, and they are not zero.
The capital-gains excise tax, with rates of 7% and 9% above a large deduction, applies to certain investment gains. It is not applied to this paycheck. If a recruiter says “Washington has no income tax, so you keep everything after FICA,” the Paid Leave and WA Cares lines are the correction.
WA Cares can be waived with an approved exemption, including some people who opted out early or who live elsewhere. This estimate cannot see an exemption, so it includes the 0.58%. If you have the letter, subtract that line yourself. Employers pay part of Paid Leave as well; that employer share shows up on the employer-cost tool, not in your net.

What this page includes
- Federal income tax using the 2026 standard deduction and Rev. Proc. 2025-32 brackets
- Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500) and Medicare (1.45%, plus Additional Medicare when wages clear the filing-status threshold)
- Washington: no state wage income tax
- State payroll: Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave, WA Cares
- Local wage tax only if you select a city/county or enter a custom percent
Local tax
Washington does not have a local wage tax in this file. City costs show up in rent and sales tax, not as a second income-tax line on the stub.
What is not included
Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. Property tax and sales tax in Washington are real costs of living and are intentionally off this paycheck.
Questions
Does Washington tax my salary?
Not with an income tax. Federal tax, Social Security, Medicare, Paid Leave, and WA Cares are the lines that do.
What is WA Cares on a stub?
A 0.58% employee premium for long-term care, with no wage cap, unless you hold an approved exemption.
Is the capital gains tax in this calculator?
No. It is not a wage tax, so a paycheck estimate that applied it would be wrong.
