New Jersey

New Jersey paycheck calculator

New Jersey uses graduated rates from 1.4% to 10.75% after a small personal exemption ($1,000 single / $2,000 joint). Joint brackets are a different schedule, not a simple doubling of single thresholds. There is no large standard deduction sitting under those rates. Newark or Jersey City employer payroll taxes are not employee withholding in this model.

Traditional 401(k) deferrals stay in the New Jersey wage base — the same stubborn pattern as Pennsylvania. Federal income tax still falls when you defer; the NJ line does not. Temporary Disability Insurance and Family Leave Insurance are real New Jersey withholdings for many employees and are not in the payroll file yet, so this stub is light by those premiums on purpose.

Someone commuting into New York City should leave NYC off this page and use the city control only when New York City residency applies. This estimate taxes New Jersey; it does not compute a New York nonresident return or allocate wage days.

  • Local wage tax only if you select a city/county or enter a custom percent

Local tax

New Jersey does not have a local wage tax in this file. City costs show up in rent and sales tax, not as a second income-tax line on the stub.

What is not included

Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. This New Jersey page does not invent taxes that are missing from the 2026 data files.

Questions

Does a 401(k) reduce New Jersey tax?

Not in this model. Employee deferrals remain in New Jersey gross income. They still reduce federal income tax.

Are New Jersey TDI and FLI included?

No. Those withholdings are documented as not modeled so a missing line is not mistaken for a zero rate.

Are joint New Jersey brackets the same as single?

No. Joint filers use a separate published schedule with different thresholds.
