Maryland
Maryland paycheck calculator
Maryland’s state brackets are only half the income tax. Every county, and Baltimore City, adds a local rate on Maryland taxable net income. The state piece runs from 2% up through new high-income brackets of 6.25% and 6.5%. The local piece for Montgomery County and Baltimore City is 3.20% in the Comptroller’s 2026 withholding facts. On a typical salary the county line can rival the state line. Leaving it off is how other calculators flatter a Maryland offer.
The personal exemption is $3,200 and phases out as income climbs. This estimate fades it in a straight line between $100,000 and $150,000 for a single filer, and between $150,000 and $200,000 for a joint return. The standard deduction is small, $3,350 single and $6,700 joint. A traditional 401(k) reduces the shared base, so both the state and the county fall together. FICA does not.
Other counties are a custom percent. The Comptroller publishes the full list, including places at 2.25% and at least one at 3.30%. Nonresidents are a simplification here: the switch uses 2.25%, which is a withholding convention, not a promise about your county. Reciprocity with D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania is noted when you mark a work state. It is not a second return.

Questions
Do I have to pick a Maryland county?
If you want a realistic net, yes. The state tax alone understates a Maryland paycheck. Montgomery County and Baltimore City are named at 3.20%. Use a custom percent for other counties.
Is the local tax a percent of the state tax?
No. It is a percent of Maryland taxable income, the same base the state brackets use.
Does a 401(k) reduce the county tax?
Yes in this model. The deferral lowers taxable income, and both the state and the county are computed on that income.
