District of Columbia
District of Columbia paycheck calculator
The District of Columbia is its own income tax, not a local add-on to Maryland or Virginia. Rates run from 4% to 10.75%. The brackets are not doubled for a joint return, which is a quiet marriage penalty relative to the federal brackets. The standard deduction follows the federal amounts for 2026, $16,100 single and $32,200 joint. There is no extra city layer on top of this tax. If a calculator adds “DC local” after already taxing DC, it is double counting.
Paid family leave in the District is an employer tax in the usual design and is not withheld from the employee here. Federal tax and FICA are. A traditional 401(k) reduces the D.C. base. Someone living in the District and working in Maryland or Virginia may be covered by reciprocity; mark the work state and read the note. This page still taxes D.C. only. It does not compute the other return or the credit.
The top rates matter only at high taxable income: 9.25% starts at $250,000, and 10.75% at $1 million, on the same schedule for single and joint filers. A $90,000 salary is not in those brackets. Read the stub line instead of the top marginal rate.

What is not included

Questions
Is there a D.C. city tax on top of a state tax?
No. The District tax is the income tax. This calculator does not stack a second local rate.
Are the brackets doubled for married filers?
No. The published schedule uses the same thresholds for single and joint filers.
I live in D.C. and work in Virginia. What is withheld?
Often the home state, after a reciprocity certificate. This estimate taxes the District because that is the jurisdiction you opened. It does not file the certificate.
