California
California paycheck calculator
A California offer is not the headline salary minus “about 30 percent.” The stub has four different mechanisms, and they do not share a wage base. Federal income tax uses the 2026 standard deduction and the Rev. Proc. 2025-32 brackets. Social Security stops at $184,500. Medicare does not stop. California then runs its own brackets on a smaller standard deduction, and State Disability Insurance takes 1.3% of wages with no ceiling.
That last line is the one people miss. SDI funds disability insurance and paid family leave. It is not part of the income-tax brackets, and the 1% mental health tax inside the 13.3% top rate only shows up above $1 million of taxable income. A traditional 401(k) lowers federal and California income tax. It does not lower Social Security, Medicare, or SDI. An HSA contribution or a Section 125 health premium usually does.
Bracket widths in this estimate follow the Tax Foundation 2026 compilation, which still carried 2025 inflation-adjusted California thresholds because the Franchise Tax Board figures were not out when that table was published. Treat a high-income result as a range, not a payroll register. Nothing here is an employer stub.

Local tax
California does not have a local wage tax in this file. City costs show up in rent and sales tax, not as a second income-tax line on the stub.
What is not included
Credits, itemized deductions, multi-state credits, property tax, sales tax, and unsourced local rates are not included. Employer payroll tables can differ from this annualized estimate. This California page does not invent taxes that are missing from the 2026 data files.
Questions
Does California tax Social Security wages the same way the IRS does?
No. California income tax has its own deduction and brackets. SDI is a separate 1.3% withholding with no wage cap in 2026. Social Security still caps at $184,500.
Why is my California net lower than a Texas offer at the same salary?
Texas has no wage income tax and no SDI. California has both, on top of the same federal tax and FICA. The compare tool puts the two stubs next to each other.
Does a 401(k) reduce California SDI?
Not in this model, and not in the usual payroll treatment. The deferral reduces income-tax wages only.
